November falls over Houston…

After a cook-in on Tuesday (2nd November – yes, I’ve fallen way behind again!), a few of us went out for a delicious and fun lunch on Wednesday.  We picked a place close to Emily’s work so she could come along, somewhere I’d never been again, Dunn Bro’s cafe.

Tracy, Julie, Lori and Emily came out to have a little peek at the newest addition to our lunch group, Eve (who of course was accompanied by her lovely parents Magz and Sam).  Lunch was fun, it was tasty (I had a lovely steak and cheese sandwich and one of the most delicious strawberry smoothies I’ve had in a loooooooooooong time) and it was reasonably priced (not to mention, of course, it’s close to both Emily and Tracy’s offices, so they can come out to play too!)

I’d happened upon an offer on Facebook for this local cupcake bakery, offering free cupcakes (score!!), so, en route back to Magz and Sams house, we stopped off at Sprinkles Cupcakes on Westheimer to pick up our complimentary four cupcakes.

Just as a mini-review, Col and I got a red velvet cupcake and a chocolate marshmallow cupcake.  Personally, I thought the chocolate marshmallow cupcake was pretty dry, there wasn’t enough marshmallow filling and, the cake itself, was very dark but didn’t taste overly chocolatey.  The red velvet cupcake, on the other hand, was divine! One of the best I’ve tasted!

I have to say, I prefer Crave Cupcakes, the consistency between the cupcakes is much better, the bakery itself is easier to get to, there is better car parking, it’s just better all round!

Our Van der Madden, Van der Waals get together was Thursday (3rd) last week, the Maddens threw together a yummy roast and Miss Emily baked a delicious blackberry and apple crumble – which went down a treat (we all even had seconds!!)

My first sponsored anything, in a looooong time!

After team ‘Beat it”s American Heart Association walk  on Saturday, we headed to the Daughters of the British Empire British Bazaar.

Daughters of the British Empire Bazaar

We were going here mainly for the food, sausage rolls, scotch eggs all the food from home that we ‘suffer’ without over here.

I have to say, I was disappointed, it was like a poor car boot sale.  Most of the food had been sold out, that which remained was over priced.  We ate a ‘plate’, but it was average food for way more than I’ve have paid in a pub locally, much of the stuff wasn’t even British.  Magz and I spent more time saying ‘that’s not British’ than anything.

Classic car show - enjoying the sun!

Most notably, they’d gotten rid of Northern Ireland, and claimed the south! Flag fail!!

It was pretty dark on my phone camera, but you can JUST make it out!

We did come away with some Sticky Toffee Pudding from the Sticky Toffee Pudding company.  Again, way overpriced, especially compared to what we’d pay in Iceland or Tesco at home, but, in a pinch and for a special occasion (Christmas in the McMaster household!) it’ll do lovely!

The Maddens joined us for a late lunch in Pei Wei, (if you haven’t been, you should try it, it’s a pretty delicious Asian diner!) before Col and I had a night of TV on the sofa!
